Hair Loss Caused by Stress: What Treatments Are Available
We answer patient questions about thinning hair, shedding and loss
First of all, how much hair loss is normal?
At our Brighton clinic, we talk to clients regularly who worry about hair shedding, but we always tell them that some daily hair loss is completely normal. Most people naturally shed around 50–100 hairs per day.
What is female pattern hair loss?
For many women, during perimenopause and menopause, levels of oestrogen gradually decline. Some women also develop female pattern hair loss, which causes gradual thinning at the top of the scalp or widening of the parting.
Can I prevent male pattern baldness?
Hair loss is common for men, and male pattern balding is largely hereditary. However, there are several things you can do to promote good hair growth: taking minoxidil, managing stress levels, avoiding smoking and excess alcohol, and maintaining a healthy scalp using gentle products.
Why does seeing a medical expert for hair loss matter?
Hair loss can look similar on the surface, but the causes differ for each individual. The earlier the cause is identified, the better the outcomes.
Can hair thinning be reversed?
The answer depends on the type of hair loss. Some conditions are reversible once the underlying trigger is addressed. Other conditions require treatment to slow or stop further hair thinning.
How do you guarantee an accurate diagnosis?
At Experts in Skin & Hair, our Brighton team of consultant dermatologists combine decades of specialist medical expertise with advanced diagnostic technology to provide accurate answers.
Doctors, consultant dermatologists and trichologists – what's the difference?
The term "dermatologist" isn't legally protected. Consultant dermatologists are doctors who have completed UK-accredited specialist training. For persistent hair loss, it is often helpful to first see a consultant dermatologist with a special interest in hair disorders.
What limitations are there with access to care in the NHS?
Waiting times to see a dermatologist through the NHS can be quite long, sometimes many months. For this reason, some people choose to see a specialist privately, where the condition can be assessed earlier and managed more proactively.
What hair conditions do Experts in Skin and Hair treat?
Our Brighton clinic treats: female pattern hair loss, male pattern baldness, telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, scarring alopecias, and scalp conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis.
