What are warts and skin tags?
Warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and are highly contagious. They appear as raised, rough lumps and can develop anywhere on the body. Common warts often appear on the hands and around the fingernails, while verrucas (plantar warts) develop on the feet — they're flat and white with small black dots in the centre, and often feel sore when weight is on them.
Skin tags (also called acrochordons) are small flesh-coloured or brown pieces of skin that protrude from the surface, usually on a small stalk. They're benign, painless, and commonly appear in areas where skin rubs together — neck, underarms, groin, eyelids, and skin folds. They're more common in middle age and older, and are associated with weight, friction, and metabolic factors.
Neither warts nor skin tags are dangerous, but they can be uncomfortable, cosmetically troubling, or get caught on clothing.

When to see a dermatologist
We're happy to assess and treat warts and skin tags, particularly when: Warts are spreading, persistent, or unresponsive to over-the-counter treatments. Verrucas are causing pain when walking. Skin tags are catching on clothing or jewellery. A growth has changed in appearance and you want it checked. You want cosmetic removal in a visible area.
We can also confirm that something is genuinely a wart or skin tag rather than something else (such as a benign mole or, very rarely, a skin cancer that mimics these growths).
